Breadcrumbs there are certain dates you hold onto, coupled with nights you can taste and hear, like footsteps. your side of the bed is empty, with a human-sized hollow from where you’d lay after a long night shift. like the mattress, i still welcome your presence. i’m afraid you’ve grown too accustomed to your father’s house. your scent lingers loudly in the annals of my mind, and the shape of your eyes, sculpted onto my skull. you appear through odd characters in my visions, i seek your fullness through them, and am met with distorted yet idyllic glances. i whisper, “what are you doing here?” you used to wash my plates and tie my shoes. i’ve left some moldy ones for you in the sink, along with my best jokes, preserved— next to the pile of lives you didn’t get to live. i just want to cook you a meal again, this time, i’ll sprinkle some life into it, and you can scrub the moldy breadcrumbs off my plate, then you’ll say, “i’m here to love you.”
Check out this new print! I post these short poems on my notes throughout the week.
They’re short but emotionally resonant, so keep your eye out 👀
Lovely work, Meklit! I especially love the sound of "sculpted onto my skull."
This was awesome.
