This week’s poem is inspired by Sylvia Plath’s, “The Bell Jar (1963)”.

I saw my life gambled away like dice in a game,
With each side, a choice was revealed,
Along with a path that aroused my soul.
One side was a wonderful career, a loving family, happiness as it were.
Another side was a human rights lawyer,
And yet another was a poet,
And another, a travelling food critic.
And above and beyond the dice were more,
With distinctly shaped sides and edges.
I saw myself sitting in the sand,
Watching my life gambled away like dice in a game,
My eyes burned with fear
Just because I couldn’t make up my mind
About which of the dice I would choose.
The dust and the distance became greater.
Picking up the dice meant losing my comfort
and getting up from the sand.
And as I sat there unable to decide,
The dice began to swell larger,
And one by one, they consumed me alive,
Along with my clothes.
Very relatable. Love the intense ending!
A die to represent the different paths a life could take... how novel! A very creative basis for an interesting poem; thanks for sharing!
